Source Naturals R-Lipoic Acid is a natural form of lipoic acid that your body can synthesize and safely metabolize. It may be better absorbed and more effective as an antioxidant than alpha-lipoic acid. R-lipoic acid by itself may be 10 times more effective than other forms of lipoic acid and has been called the "mitochondrial antioxidant" because it is a key component of mitochondrial dehydrogenase complexes, which may help to slow the natural aging process in animals. Also, animal research has shown that R-lipoic acid can increase or maintain levels of other antioxidants including CoQ10, vitamin C, vitamin E and glutathione, which may decline with age, more efficiently than other forms of lipoic acid.*

R-lipoic acid is the more active form of the universal antioxidant and critical nutrient, alpha-lipoic acid. R-lipoic acid supports healthy sugar metabolism, liver function, and energy generation, all of which positively influence many biological functions.
R-lipoic acid is native to the body and is better metabolized in the body than the more commonly available form, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA). ALA is a 50/50 combination of natural-form R-lipoic and the synthetic version, S-lipoic acid, which may actually slow the activity of R-lipoic acid.
Through enzymatic action, R-lipoic acid generates acetyl coenzyme A, the starting point of the Krebs cycle that produces almost all of the body’s ATP cellular energy.
R-lipoic acid can increase glucose uptake by muscle and nerve cells and may protect those cells from glycation. This is important because glycation is believed to be a major source of cellular aging.
Lipoic acid is known as the “universal antioxidant” and R-lipoic acid is more efficient than the other forms. R-lipoic acid helps to recycle the important antioxidants, vitamins C and E, after they have been used up by quenching free radicals. The recycling function brings them back into their antioxidant forms. R-lipoic acid protects cells and neutralizes the harmful byproducts of glucose metabolism. It protects the important, energy-producing mitochondria in your cells, where most oxygen damage frequently occurs. Since it is both water- and fat-soluble, it therefore neutralizes a greater number and broader range of free radicals. Because it is central to so many critical functions in the body, it belongs at the very center of your wellness program. *
